Dr. Perri shares an inside look at the development and success of Conjugate Gaze Cranial Release.
What conditions can you treat/address with the Conjugate Gaze Cranial Release?
Really, any functional somatic condition can be approached from a cranial perspective. In Advancing Conjugate Gaze I discuss the cranial fascial planes as windows to the body, and when you look at the neural circuitry this becomes quite obvious. Migraine headaches, trigeminal neuralgia, cervical hyperextension (whiplash), cervical pain, fibromyalgia, myo-fascial pain, extremity problems, gait-related abnormalities and many other pain related symptoms are all conditions that can be considered for cranial release.
What is your background in the area of Cranial Release? Have you done any other courses/trainings in this area?
I’ve read Dr. Upledger’s books, Dr. Liem in cranial osteopathy and a broad range of both chiropractic and osteopathic texts in craniopathy including Dr. DeJarnette’s work in SOT. I’ve attended Craniosacral training in Boston. The exact references are in the reference section of my new book- Advancing Conjugate Gaze. Basically John the cranial work is an excellent approach to any musculoskeletal problem given the references to the homunculus, and its cranial application to the peripheral somatic complaint. More of this is covered in the new book.
What separates your Cranial Release program from others available?
The Conjugate Gaze Cranial Release is the only approach (that I know) that employs the application of conjugate eye movements and patient-assisted movements to activate corrective neural responses.
Do you have a favorite success story using the Conjugate Gaze Cranial Release?
There are so many success stories. Having been in practice for 33 years and having 4 generations of patients makes one success story very difficult. All I can say is that I have devoted the past 40 or more years to intense academic study to develop an approach to mind-body therapy that is effective, reproducible, and cost-effective as well.
Can you sum up the benefits of using the Conjugate Gaze Cranial Release?
The Conjugate Gaze Cranial Release is an effective approach to working with patients with both simple and complex pain. The ‘cranial vault hold’ positions are an effective way to calm anxious patients, and start the process of unfolding complex pain patterns. I am often amazed at how seemingly unrelated conditions begin to resolve when the Conjugate Gaze Cranial Release is done.
WHY IS CONJUGATE GAZE CRANIAL RELEASE IMPORTANT TO ALL YOUR PATIENTS?
If you have not done cranial fascial releases in the Conjugate Gaze Cranial approach you are probably missing an important link to helping your patients. Cranial fascial releases in conjunction with conjugate gazes and patient-assisted movements are a window to the human body that you may not have considered. Consider the fact that the cranial sutures are intimately linked to the cranial fascial network which in turn has direct extensions into the cranial periosteum. This dynamic relationship has far reaching implications. When you consider that you can activate specific neural pathways by facilitating fascial releases that are linked to specific autonomic functions you then realize that any state of body or somatic dysfunction is amenable to cranial release.
You should not be misled to believe that Conjugate Gaze Cranial Release is only for cranial conditions such as migraine headaches, cervicalgia, occipitalgia, or other related conditions. When you understand the Conjugate Gaze Cranial Release you will see how you can work with many and multiple dysfunctional states that span the spectrum of both musculoskeletal disorders and functional somatic disorders. The cranial work is an excellent starting point for activating autonomic and somatic outflow to specific anatomical sites such as the knee in sprain and strain, the shoulder in frozen shoulder or adhesive capsulitis, the neck and low back in strain and myofascitis, and the hips and joints or in patients with chronic pain. I cannot overstate how wonderfully patients in chronic pain respond to the Conjugate Gaze Cranial Release.
One of the immediate benefits of the Conjugate Gaze Cranial Release is the ability to facilitate an immediate “relaxation response” in your patients through the activation of the parasympathetic reflex response as noted by Schleip. This immediately releases painful body states and accommodates a more complete approach to manual manipulative care. Once you are familiar with the Conjugate Gaze Cranial Release you will be as excited as I am in its many and diverse applications. I am presently blessed with 4 generations of patients in whom I have evolved this work over the past 33 years, and I must say that they are a living testimony to the efficacy of this patient-centered approach. I hope your patients will enjoy the same benefits of this wonderful work as my patients have and continue to do so.
